Bastia supporters charge at Lyon in latest French hooligan incident

"The LFP condemns in the strongest possible terms the incidents that occurred before the match and at half-time of the match between SC Bastia and Olympique Lyonnais".

The Ligue 1 meeting between Bastia and Lyon in Corsica was delayed after the home fans ran on to the pitch and attempted to attack Lyon players during their warm-up.

The game was initially delayed by nearly an hour after a section of Bastia's supporters made their way onto the Stade Armand-Cesari pitch and confronted Lyon's players in troubling scenes while Bruno Genesio's squad were completing their pre-match warm-up.

It is the second time in a week that Lyon have been caught up in football violence.

Lyon's players were ushered down the tunnel as stewards held back the pitch invaders, causing a lengthy delay to kick-off.

Lyon players left the field and initially refused to continue warmups, delaying the match until the league made it clear that it would be played no matter what.

"We must stop, we must stop, they hit the players", Lyon coach Bruno Genesio told club president Jean-Michel Aulas in the corridors of the stadium.

Lyon's players had been finishing their pre-game warm-up when about 50 Bastia fans - many of them dressed in black - attacked them, an AFP reporter at the scene said.

"Bastia fans kicked balls into [Mathieu] Gorgelin's goal", said defender Jeremy Berthod. They and the staff were all very shocked. Players from both teams went back to their changing rooms before calm was restored.

The latest incident comes after Lyon's UEFA Europa League quarterfinal clash with Besiktas was delayed for 15 minutes after supporters spilled on to the pitch to avoid clashes between both sets of supporters.
