Mumps cases at Barrington High School officially an outbreak

What was previously considered a "cluster" is now a confirmed outbreak of the highly contagious mumps disease at suburban Barrington High School, Lake County Health Department officials announced Tuesday.

At the time, Shwartz-Maltz said school cleaning staff completed an intense cleaning of the whole school.

Toronto's mumps outbreak continues to spread; three new cases were confirmed Wednesday, bringing the total to 31 this year.

"The risk of acquiring the mumps in Toronto schools is low because most schools have high vaccination rates and the mumps vaccine is required for school attendance in Ontario", the letter said.

In a newsletter, school officials assured parents that they shouldn't feel overly concerned about the case. The case has not been confirmed and the Chicago Department of Public Health considers it a preliminary diagnosis.

Mumps is a serious contagious disease which is usually spread when an infected person coughs, sneezes or simply talks.

Children with symptoms of mumps should stay home from school, and visit a doctor.

There were more suspected cases at Prairie and Station middle schools.

Chicago Public Schools notified parents on Monday about a case of mumps at Helen C. Peirce School of International Studies, 1423 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., according to the district.

In severe cases, mumps can cause infection in the brain, painful swelling of the testicles or ovaries, pancreatitis and hearing loss.

Mumps is passed through saliva and mucus, especially by sharing cups or other items, officials said.
