Red kettle fundraiser aims for $100k

"I'm from Phoenix, Arizona, so the only time I'm homesick is when it's cold like this", Weld said.

The sound of bell-ringing accompanied with a red kettle is widely recognized across the country and here in the Tri-Lakes Area volunteers have been working to ring in as many donations as they can for the Salvation Army.

Salvation Army workers and volunteers planned to continue distribution of gifts at 8 a.m. Saturday morning. "We are blessed to have a great advisory board which is ingrained in the community". It looks like a Norman Rockwell painting to me.

Individuals, businesses, church groups, civic organizations, class projects and families adopted Angels from the Angel Trees, and purchased gifts and other items and turned them in to The Salvation Army, where they were arranged and grouped according to families and needs expressed.

Officials with the local Salvation Army found gold amid the green and silver deposited into its red kettles.

"We help facilitate the hiring of kettle coordinator and makes sure they have what they need", Fleming said.

"We have a youth program here for music, and the arts". "It goes right into our social service program like our soup kitchen and the men's shelter". Because of the loss of income, the family was facing a bleak Christmas for their children. Recipients can qualify for up to $100 once every 12 months.

"The Salvation Army, this year, did a little bit more than what we agreed to", Stone Road Mall general manager Tony Stapley said, noting that although it wasn't strictly allowed, it wasn't unappreciated. "The safety of our bell ringers has to come first though".

The kettles will be out at locations around the community until December 24. The effort started the Monday after Thanksgiving.

"I like helping people, and I been helping people all my life", she said.

"With just nine more days to ring, we're hoping Tulsans will step up", Campbell said.
