Zika remains global emergency, virus still spreading

The committee heard updates from the governments of the US, Brazil, and Singapore, which has reported more than 150 cases of Zika since the disease cropped up there about a week ago. There is no vaccine or treatment for Zika.

However, Dr Amar who is also the Ipoh hospital's Head of the Paediatric Department was of the opinion that it would not be easy for the Malaysian society.

The patient's blood and urine samples tested positive for Zika, but his serious clinical condition could be due to existing health afflictions and not primarily due to the Zika virus.

The new cases include a second pregnant woman in Singapore diagnosed with Zika. State officials did not reveal how the mosquitoes were captured.

NEA said it is continuing with its vector control operations to control the Aedes mosquito population in Aljunied Crescent, Sims Drive, Kallang Way and Paya Lebar Way. "Most have recovered while the rest are recovering well", the ministry said in a statement. "But in other countries where it might enter at some time, that might not be the case".

"The cupboard is bare, there's no way to provide that", he said at a briefing with reporters in Washington, D.C.

On Friday, Singapore announced that its total Zika virus count is up to 189 in just one week.

But Democrats oppose that package because it would exclude Planned Parenthood from the list of providers that would get new funding for contraception to combat the spread of Zika.

Its assessment came after a group of health experts called for the Games to be cancelled, arguing that holding them would only exacerbate what had become a global epidemic. The USA, Australia, Taiwan and South Korea have urged pregnant women against travelling to Singapore.

The Malaysian health ministry on Saturday said it has detected the first case of a locally transmitted Zika infection in a 61-year-old man in the state of Sabah.

An individual in Mt. Juliet has tested positive for the Zika virus following travel to an area where active mosquito transmission of the virus is now taking place and travel advisories have been issued, according to the Mt. Juliet Police Department. The virus can also be spread through sexual transmission.

Scientists need to examine possible factors that could affect Zika's damage, including genetic factors, environmental contaminants, and other co-infections, said David Heymann, the committee's chair and an infectious disease professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
