National Guard activated after night of unrest in Milwaukee

Though he can't comment on specific plans concerning the possible employment of units, Thompson says, "Working with the Executive Office and civil authorities is an ongoing process and that the Wisconsin National Guard stands ready to support civilian law enforcement, if called upon".

"Our police officers are doing everything they can to restore order", Barrett said, noting that the entire city needs to help restore peace.

The White House says President Barack Obama has been briefed on the outbreak of violence in a predominantly black neighborhood in Milwaukee after a fatal, officer-involved shooting. The semiautomatic handgun the 23-year-old suspect had was stolen in a burglary in March, according to Capt. Mark Stanmeyer.

Bush leads the nearby Pentecostal Church of God in Christ. Almost 40 percent of Milwaukee's 600,000 residents are black, and heavily concentrated on the north side.

Singh said Sunday that the neighborhood is usually peaceful, and he believes the trouble was caused by outsiders. He isn't sure he'll rebuild.

Later that night, fires were started at businesses including a BMO Harris Bank, a beauty suppliers, and an O'Reilly Auto Parts store, with Mayor Tom Barrett appealing for calm during a midnight press conference.

The man was hit twice, in the chest and in the arm, Barrett said, adding that the unidentified officer had a body camera that was "operating" during the shooting.

After word of the latest shooting had spread late Saturday, some members of a gathering crowd began to throw stones and set buildings on fire. As a result of Saturday night's clashes, one police officer was injured and three rioters arrested, according to police.

Two to three dozen people are sweeping and picking up debris Sunday morning around a BP gas station that was burned and largely destroyed near the intersection at the center of the violence Saturday night.

On its Twitter account, Milwaukee police said there were also instances of rocks being thrown at police, squad cars set on fire, and officer requiring hospital treatment after he was hit in the head by a brick thrown through a squad vehicle window. Darlene Rose, 31, said she understands the anger that fueled the violence, but that it doesn't help. Police said the man was armed. He said numerous gunshots could be heard during the hours of unrest.

Neither his race nor the officer's was immediately released, nor were they identified.
