Historically, segregation and discrimination caused a lack of access to public pools throughout the 1900's and personal pools were unheard of. They read that pools largely were not built in African-American neighborhoods and that in recent times, municipal pools have been increasingly closed.

Taken together, that history puts African-American children at risk.

The USA Swimming Foundation says that 70 percent of Black children can't swim and that they are 3 times as likely to drown as their white counterparts. She scolds me about being too stubborn.

During the 2012 London Olympics, Netherland's Ranomi Kromowidjojo set an Olympic record in the Women's 50m freestyle, posting a blazing time of 24.05.

"It was a great moment, but I still have work to do", Manuel said late Friday night as she walked toward the practice pool at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium.

"I just wanted to re-focus and move forward from the 100", she said.

"I tried to take the weight of the Black community off my shoulders".

"She told me she would take a year off and go to college". "I hope I'm an inspiration for others to get out there and try swimming".

On Thursday afternoon, 19-year-old gymnast Simone Biles won all-around gold, capping off her four-year run of dominance that included three straight world all-around titles, 14 total world championship medals and four national all-around golds.

Manuel recognizes the significance of her achievement, yet she has never wanted to be defined exclusively by the color of her skin.

"I'm not sure if this will change the perception immediately", Sharron said. It's a kind of pressure that she had to learn to compartmentalize.
