We Asked Republican Voters About Their Divided Party. Their Answers Were Amazing

Donald Trump has accepted the Republican nomination for president, promising anxious Americans that they will be safer and richer if he is elected in November.

Trump harped on restoring "law and order" to the country, which has been a regular theme throughout his campaign.

He would roll back federal regulations that he said cost the country $2 trillion a year, providing new wealth that will allow an upsurge in spending to fix roads, bridges, airports and tunnels. It reads: "'I'm With Her.' I choose to recite a different pledge", he said.

And efforts to present Trump's family members as his character witnesses were mired by revelations that a section of his wife's speech contained plagiarized material.

Foreigners from terror-linked countries would be banned, a wall will be built on the Mexican border and trade deals would be ripped up and renegotiated. "It was better than Romney's, it was better than McCain's, and I'm even tempted to say it was better than Bush's".

One-time presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders, a Democrat, took umbrage.

This is really only noteworthy because it happened at the Republican National Convention- both because the party just ratified an especially anti-LGBTQ platform and because the crowd received his declaration so warmly.

Julian Zelizer, professor of history and public affairs at Princeton University, told Xinhua that the speech aimed to energize his base, not unify the Republican Party, which it probably did.

"Unfortunately, I've seen these kinds of things over and over again in Washington", Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC) told TPM.

Some members of Congress, such as South Carolina Rep. Mark Sanford, are also unlikely to endorse Trump. Many of the Republican old guard had stayed away.

While Trump was successful in systematizing his campaign message - the Republican National Committee adopted his isolationist positions in its official party platform - he is unlikely to benefit from the optics of the week, which highlighted seething fissures in the party's ranks during a phase of the campaign when nominees typically enjoy a bump in the polls. She is on the verge of naming a running mate to join her in taking on Trump and his vice-presidential pick, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, in the general election. Clinton fired off an icy rebuke on Twitter, telling him: "We are better than this".

Unusually at a Republican convention, Mr Trump also gave his support to the gay community, promising protection against "the violence and oppression of a hateful foreign ideology" following last month's massacre in Orlando. He still professes to believe that Trump will make an adequate head of state. "Only my father will say, I'll fight for you", Ivanka Trump said. "But being against the other candidate is not a message, and it's not a winning strategy".

On Wednesday night, Trump's last major rival during the bitterly fought Republican primary battle, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, was booed off the stage for refusing to endorse Trump and urging Republicans instead to "vote your conscience".

Warming up the crowd before Trump took to the stage Friday, his daughter Ivanka tried to soften her father's image.

"This has always been the philosophy of the Trump Organization", Trump said of the company founded by her dad.

But Trump's nomination speech, like every Trump speech, was completely devoid of solutions to the many, many problems Trump said was wrong with America.

His campaign has defied political norms - fueling ethnic tensions, offending key voting blocs, eschewing big-spending ad buys or campaign infrastructure and relying on heavy media coverage.

But his rollercoaster campaign defeated 16 rivals and steamrolled stubborn party opposition after being written off as a joke.

He has shocked foreign leaders by questioning key pillars of American foreign policy. Americans, he said, have "lived through one worldwide humiliation after another". "Our plan will put America First". Americanism, not globalism, will be our credo.
