There he goes again: Trump slams 'ruined' Ted Cruz

During the hotly contested primary battle, Cruz and other Republican contenders had vowed to support the eventual nominee, so many had expected him to endorse Trump. Ted Cruz Wednesday night after he urged Republicans to "vote their conscience" Wednesday night in a primetime address at the Republican National Convention - rather than endorsing GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump.

So, as controversy continues to surround Trump's candidacy and the Republican Party, can the businessman and reality star win the USA presidency?

Speaking 12 hours after his historic acceptance speech, and with running mate and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence at his side, Trump praised his children, and predicted a major bounce coming out of the four-day convention.

"America was shocked to its core when our police officers in Dallas were so brutally executed", Trump said.

"I have no interest in helping continue this controversy", he said.

In other words, the implication was, "don't vote for Donald Trump".

The blatant sign of GOP disunity angered some GOP delegates, former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, the Trump campaign and members of the nominee's family. Cruz said Trump had not asked for his endorsement, and that he had told him over the phone three days earlier that he would not do so in his convention speech.

Currently, Trump is neck-in-neck with his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, with Wednesday's Real Clear Politics' poll average showing Clinton ahead by a hair, leading by 2.7 points - a mere sliver given that the margin of error is 2 points.

He referred to Trump attacking his relatives during the primaries: he shared a social-media post insulting Cruz's wife's looks, spread a National Enquirer article about marital infidelity, and insinuated Cruz's father may have been linked to JFK's assassination. "America deserves better [than Hillary Clinton]". "I'm not going to get into criticizing or attacking Donald Trump, but I'll give you this response: I am not in the habit of supporting people who attack my wife and attack my father".

Cruz's defiance follows a week of drama, including plagiarism charges against Mr Trump's wife, Melania. She said people who had doubts about the Bushes and Romney put them aside, and now it's time to do the same for Trump.

Donald Trump loves addressing big crowds and Thursday he will speak to perhaps his most important yet.

Cruz is already positioning himself to run again for the White House in 2020 and discouraged supporters from casting a vote for him this fall.

As the crowd chanted: "Lock her up" for her handling of US foreign policy, Trump waved them off and said: "Let's defeat her in November".

"I have to say, it's not about Trump or Cruz, it's about the United States of America".

Democrats will formally nominate Clinton at their convention next week in Philadelphia.

Cruz said he delivered this speech out of "obligation".
