As for the energy needed to power those cars, Musk made the case for his proposed merger of Tesla, which also builds energy storage systems, and Solar City, the solar panel company he co-founded and chairs. Tesla is also developing a heavy-duty truck, called the Tesla Semi.

"It would therefore be morally reprehensible to delay release simply for fear of bad press or some mercantile calculation of legal liability", Musk wrote.

Once fully autonomous driving is commercially available in the Teslas, Musk indicated that users can summon their Teslas from anywhere.

There would also be a Tesla shared fleet which will allow owners, with the tap of a button on the Tesla mobile app, to rent their cars when not in use.

To achieve that goal, Musk said Tesla and SolarCity need to be combined into a single company.

That has been apparent for quite some time, but it wasn't until now and the unveiling of his "Master Plan, Part Deux" that we truly understood the scale and breadth of what Musk has been working towards for the future of Tesla, and indeed the vehicle industry.

"As is typical, Elon Musk has laid out a grandiose plan for the future with no timeframes and few specifics, and no mention of how and when Tesla will be profitable", Michelle Krebs, an analyst for Autotrader.com Inc., said in a e-mail. Musk expects its portfolio of commercial vehicles to be unveiled next year. Tesla intends to create a "smoothly integrated" solar-plus-storage product that will be available through one service contact.

Musk pointed out this will help pay off your vehicle, making the pricey Teslas more affordable.

Elon Musk has released his second master plan for his electric auto company Tesla, and he has some pretty ambitious goals.

"This dramatically lowers the true cost of ownership to the point where nearly anyone could own a Tesla", he added in the blog.

In addition to this, ride-sharing and flawless autonomy, with fleet-acquired data will make the cars "10 times safer" than manual driving.

The new road map follows a first master plan Mr Musk unveiled in 2006, when he promised "an electric Vehicle without compromises" and a long-term vision of building "affordably priced family cars".

Tesla's autonomous driving plans are well-known, as is its (beta) Autopilot system.

"Once we get to the point where Autopilot is approximately 10 times safer than the USA vehicle average, the beta label will be removed", he said.

"Tesla engineering has transitioned to focus heavily on designing the machine that makes the machine - turning the factory itself into a product", Musk wrote.
