Republicans Prepare For A Party In Cleveland

Instead of a manicured message of unity, viewers saw the fractured face of a party still coming to grips with the polarizing man of the moment.

"Again, what I said was I think Melania Trump is an extremely smart and articulate woman, and the outline of that speech is her own, and she put those thoughts together so she could talk about her husband, and if the staff didn't vet the speech properly, what thoughts were put together, and the person who wrote that speech, they should be held accountable, there's no question about that", he said.

Also on the agenda are speeches that focus on revitalizing the economy and creating jobs.

The speakers highlight the wedge Trump's candidacy has driven through the GOP. Pence is scheduled to address the convention on Wednesday.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says he is disappointed but has "no discontent" over presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump's decision to choose someone else as his running mate.

Democrats are offering plenty of counter-programming this week while Republican leaders gather in Cleveland to nominate Donald Trump for president during the party's widely televised convention.

The convention's first night, themed "Make America Safe Again", opened with a series of speeches from family members of people killed while serving in the military or at the hands of people in the United States illegally. But with an eye on history, many wanted a floor vote to record for posterity who backed the 70-year-old Trump and those who did not.

In Michelle Obama's 2008 speech in Denver, she said: "And Barack and I were raised with so numerous same values: like, you work hard for what you want in life, that your word is your bond, that you do what you say you're going to do, that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don't know them and even if you don't agree with them".

The day concluded with an array of speeches from survivors of the 2012 attack at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, as well as Trump's wife, Melania.

In a phone interview with "Fox & Friends" Monday, Trump said former Marine Gavin Eugene Long "seems to be a member of that group also".

The couple will then return to NY.

The development came after a chaotic start to the Republican gathering in Cleveland, which erupted in jeers from Trump opponents after their bid to hold a roll call vote on convention rules was quashed. Their movement ultimately was defeated when Republican Representative Steve Womack of Arkansas, who was presiding over the session, allowed a voice vote and declared victory to those in favor of the rules as previously determined by a committee. Ted Cruz in the primary and upset Trump supporters.

Trouble could continue on Tuesday.

A handful of states were nearly successful in getting a roll call vote from the floor, causing loud chants and yelling.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Clinton has "a tortured relationship to the truth".

"If Hilary Clinton can't give us the truth, why should we give her the presidency", Pat Smith said.

The Trump effort to shut down opposition featured Utah senator Mike Lee being left standing at a microphone unable to speak on a motion to allow delegates to freely vote their conscience if they had qualms about the candidate they were pledged to after a procedural motion to end debate passed after only one speaker.

It wasn't until the evening before before the convention was set to begin that GOP officials released a full list of speakers or said who will speak when.

"An unauthorized use at the Republican Convention against our wishes", the British band said in a succinct statement posted on Twitter.

A year ago, few imagined Donald Trump as a headline speaker at the Republican National Convention - let alone as its star. A string of senior Republicans, anxious about Trump's temperament and policies, were already staying away from the convention.
