Mike Pence Accepts Nomination for VP at the 2016 RNC

"We had a fair process and Donald Trump is the nominee".

Eric Trump moved quickly to the podium.

The many supporters of Ted Cruz in the Kentucky delegation shook their heads Friday morning.

During the campaign for the party's nomination, Mr Trump insulted Senator Cruz' wife's looks and suggested the Texan's father was with John F. Kennedy's assassin just before the president was shot in Dallas in 1963. Oh, he attacked Ms Clinton and congratulated Mr Trump, but he never followed through on his pledge - his word - to endorse whomever was the party's nominee.

Yeah, so I know Ted Cruz said that people should vote their conscience. And that pledge wasn't a blanket commitment that if you go and slander and attack Heidi, that I'm going to nonetheless come like a servile puppy dog and say thank you very much for maligning my wife and maligning my father.

Ted Cruz after the Texas lawmaker failed to endorse GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump at the Republican National Convention the prior night. "In this election, there is only one candidate who will uphold the Constitution", Gingrich said. "He's politically dead", said B J Van Gundy, a long time GOP activist in Georgia.

Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, said he feels that Cruz "might have missed a two-foot putt". Trump and Pence shared the stage only briefly on Saturday as Pence publicly agreed to be Trump's running mate, and their first televised interview together, on CBS's "60 Minutes", was not smooth.

But Ohio has no chance of making a deal this year, because Trump came into the convention with enough votes to win. "I think you'll see a little bit of theatrics. It's about the United States of America".

The booing was so intense that the Trump campaign reportedly encouraged its staffers on the convention floor to try to calm the delegates down.

Before Cruz's anticipated speech, which had reportedly been carefully screened by Trump campaign officials, Paul Manafort, Trump's top campaign adviser, said that it would be clear from Cruz's speech that he's supporting Trump. The candidate has provided relatively few, and thin, policy proposals.

Reaction to Cruz was swift. Mind you, Trump made his this allegation against Cruz's father the day he effectively clinched the Republican nomination. "As far as the contract [of party unity] was concerned, he was the one in violation, not anybody else". As Cruz was concluding his speech, Trump entered the Quicken Loan Arena, with television cameras showing him smiling and giving a thumbs up to the crowd.

Following Cruz's speech Wednesday, another Texas delegate said he was disappointed in the senator.

It's this private fear that Cruz was speaking to when he told audiences "vote your conscience".

But he also exhorted people to vote in the November election "for candidates up and down the ticket who you trust to defend our freedom and to be faithful to the Constitution".

Anti-Trump Republican delegate Ken Cuccinelli told Reuters he escorted Senator Cruz's wife Heidi off the convention floor in Cleveland out of concern for her safety.
