Jeurys Familia: Familia pulls escape act to earn 33rd save

The Mets defeated the Cubs for the fifth time in six games this season and for the ninth time in 10 games overall going back to last year's NLCS.

Chicago-After losing last night, the New York Mets simply had to find a way to beat the Chicago Cubs tonight.

"It's hard not to chase (Familia's pitches) sometime", Maddon said.

DETROIT - Matt Boyd (1-2) allowed three hits in six innings, sending last-place Minnesota to another loss just hours after it announced the firing of general manager Terry Ryan.

"And that's what we did".

Familia had a shaky but ultimately successful ninth as the Mets held on for a 2-1 victory. After loading the bases, Matt Szczur grounded into a fielder's choice out at home plate and then Kris Bryant hit into a game-ending 5-4-3 double play against NY closer Jeurys Familia.

New York Yankees' Alex Rodriguez reacts as he rounds the bases with a home run during the second inning of a baseball game against the Baltimore Orioles Monday, July 18, 2016, at Yankee Stadium in New York. Harrison chugged to third then popped up and strolled home when the relay throw from second baseman Scooter Gennett went by Perez. "He was making good pitches and I was just fighting them off. And thank God I did".

A's 7, Astros 4 • Josh Reddick and Danny Valencia drew bases-loaded walks in host Oakland's five-run fourth inning and it went on to win.

Mariners 4, White Sox 3 • Adam Lind's three-run pinch-hit homer in the bottom of the ninth off David Robertson won the game for Seattle, which had been shut out by Chris Sale through eight innings.

Tuesday's game was originally touted as a showdown between two aces - Mets starter Noah Syndergaard and Cubs counterpart Jake Arrieta. Hendricks has been dominant in two starts against the Mets, allowing one run and six hits over 13 innings in a pair of wins. He walked two and struck out eight.

"That was a little more like it", said Arrieta, who made his first start since July 8. "With that said, it's still nice to come out and keep your team in the game, especially when the guy on the other side is doing the same thing". We had some opportunities, but he made some good pitches.

Syndergaard left after working 5 2/3 innings with the game tied 1-1.

The Cubs supported Arrieta's decision, knowing he would have pitched if asked.

"I'm not sure where I'm at in the league, but I'm sure in the top 10", said the right-hander, whose confidence never seemed to waned even in struggles. "I expect to pitch more like this in regards to aggressiveness and keeping the ball down low. (But) I felt pretty crisp in terms of mechanics out there".

Chicago (56-37) lost for the second time in three games. They scored each of the previous five times. Rivera tried to throw Contreras out at third, but his throw sailed into left field.

Familia's last blown save came on July 30, 2015, when he surrendered that infamous homer to San Diego's Justin Upton at rain-soaked Citi Field in a dispiriting loss that came the day before the Mets acquired Yoenis Cespedes and Wilmer Flores had his heroics against the Washington Nationals with a walk-off homer in extra innings. However, right fielder Michael Conforto fired a flawless strike to Rivera to tag Arrieta as he crossed the plate. Jose Reyes tripled to lead off the sixth and Curtis Granderson sacrificed him home for the only run Arrieta would allow. The Mets are 44-19 when they hit at least one home run.

Gibson accomplished the feat in his final start of the 1968 regular-season and his first in 1969, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
