Declaring America in crisis, Donald Trump pledged to cheering Republicans and still-skeptical voters Thursday night that as president he will restore the safety they fear they're losing, strictly curb immigration and save the nation from Hillary Clinton's record of "death, destruction, terrorism and weakness". As the crowd, fiercely opposed to Clinton, broke out in its oft-used chant, "Lock her up", he waved them off, and declared, "Let's defeat her in November". Thousands of supporters who were gathered in the convention hall roared their approval.

When it was over, Trump was joined on stage by family members as balloons cascaded from above and confetti blew around the arena. King said the less reaction the better.

"Tonight, Donald Trump painted a dark picture of an America in decline". (Barron, his youngest son and the only of his children not to speak at the convention, is only 10.) She and her husband, Jared Kushner, are among Trump's most trusted advisers. He still professes to believe that Trump will make an adequate head of state. "And we will make America great again". "I guess in Texas though we support God, family and country in that order".

Republican candidates had pledged during the primary contests to support the party's eventual nominee.

Trump bashed trade deals, a hallmark of his campaign, citing a loss of manufacturing jobs that may not be a result of those deals.

He would roll back federal regulations that he said cost the country $2 trillion a year, providing new wealth that will allow an upsurge in spending to fix roads, bridges, airports and tunnels. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told CNN that he "totally" disagrees with Trump's suggestion that US support could be conditional, adding on a Facebook Live that North Atlantic Treaty Organisation is "the most successful military alliance in the history of the world". "We have never elected an angry president", he said.

"I've been one of his harshest critics, but I really have to admit he delivered absolutely the right speech with the right tone that he had to do for a Republican nominee", said Dunning, also a member of the State Republican Executive Committee.

In his speech, Trump offered little in the way of details about his policies but rather portrayed himself as a fresh alternative to traditional politicians, willing to consider new approaches to vexing problems and help working-class people who may feel abandoned.

In conversations with The Jerusalem Post, party delegates across the GOP spectrum seem to have rallied behind the institution of the Republican Party, alongside Reince Priebus, its chairman, and Rep. Paul Ryan, the speaker of the House of Representatives. He also disavowed America's foreign policy posture under both Democratic and Republican presidents, criticizing "fifteen years of wars in the Middle East" and declaring that "Americanism, not globalism, will be our credo".

Looking ahead to her own speech Thursday night, Ivanka Trump joked in the interview joked that her biggest hope is that she doesn't trip on stage.

A lot now rests on the speech Mr Trump will give at the closing of the event on Thursday night (this morning, Singapore time).

As president, Trump said he would defend allies against Russian aggression only after first ensuring they had met their financial commitments.

"Americans watching this address tonight have seen the recent images of violence in our streets and the chaos in our communities", Trump will say, according to excerpts of prepared remarks released by the Trump campaign.

"I don't do anything unless I win", Trump insisted. "Beginning on January 20, 2017, safety will be restored", Trump will say. "This will all change when I take office", he will continue.

The prevailing narrative at the Cleveland convention has not been about Trump's positions, but dominated instead by the failure of he party's various factions to unite behind Trump.

He was introduced by his daughter Ivanka, who announced a childcare policy proposal that the campaign had not mentioned before.

Never before have I seen a politician so thoroughly misread an audience and a moment. I'll be talking about many different things.
