YouTube Red & Music App Launch In Australia

YouTube Red benefits apply across the site and all YouTube apps.

YouTube Red users will automatically be given access to Google Play Music, and vice versa.

Video-sharing website YouTube has launched its subscription service YouTube Red in Australia - the first country outside the U.S to get the channel.

YouTube have said that the majority of money made from these services will go to musical artists and video makers, though they haven't confirmed any specifics.

Also, launching is YouTube Music, a music discovery offering, which will work in conjunction with Google's other music service Google Play. The Today screen is a curated selection of popular, or rising content, as well themed "spotlight" lists, and a third tab keeps track of videos you've "liked" by clicking the thumbs up icon. "You can save videos to watch offline and play videos in the background on your phone or tablet". Google is also running a 30-day free trial of the service at launch.

Business Insider has reached out to YouTube to find out what's going on.

While YouTube claims its new app is a totally different idea of streaming music services like Apple Music and Spotify, its unique library will make it a viable competitor, especially given the video component.

Mimicking Netflix's "Original Series", YouTube Red has 10 shows of original content, but it's all from YouTube "stars" like Lilly Singh, Rooster Teeth, and PewDiePie, so if you're not keen on makeup tutorials and heavily edited humour, then this might not be the best option for you.
