USA missile system a threat to Russia: Vladimir Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin is wrapping up a two-day trip to Greece by visiting the monastic community of Mount Athos, one of Orthodox Christianity's holiest sites.

Following his visit to Athens on Friday and his meetings with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Pavlopoulos, Putin attended a liturgy at Karyes on Mt. Athos, where he met again with Pavlopoulos.

Putin, while speaking on a trip to Athens, Greece, Friday said he would have to respond after the US deployed its missile defense in Romania and Poland.

"We won't take any action until we see rockets in areas that neighbor us", he said. That the whole project began as a preventative measure against Iran's nuclear program. "We will wait until Poland takes certain action". "We've been repeating like a mantra that we will be forced to respond".

"It is a matter of importance that we can keep joining efforts so that this Russian corner in Athos will be cultivating spiritual strength of all Orthodox Christians", he said.

Washington has not responded to Putin's latest comments on the missile defense system.

"It will be the same case with Poland", Putin warned.

Putin did not specify what actions Russian Federation would take, but he insisted that it was not making the first step, only responding to moves by Washington.

Recall what then-president Dmitiry Medvedev said in November 2008: "Russia will deploy Iskander missile systems in its enclave in Kaliningrad to neutralize, if necessary, the anti-ballistic missile system in Europe".

A North Atlantic Treaty Organization missile-defense system was installed in Romania earlier this month, and will be operated by American soldiers.
