Ryan Vogelsong suffered eye injury on HBP

Pittsburgh pitcher Ryan Vogelsong left Monday's Pirates-Rockies game in the second inning after being hit in the face by a Jordan Lyles pitch.

One has to feel badly for Jordan Lyles too, because while nobody is claiming that Ryan Vogelsong being hit by the pitch was at all due to malicious intent, he still did throw a ball 91 miles per hour that struck somebody in the head, and that's not something that any decent human being wants to do.

The Pirates said after Monday's game that the pitcher has a left eye injury, including the orbital bone around it. He was admitted to Allegheny General Hospital, and no further updates will be available until Tuesday.

Vogelsong was making his second start of the season, filling in because of a rainout between the Pirates and Rockies on Sunday. He played seven years with the Giants, posting a 48-49 record with a 3.93 ERA in 162 games.

Despite the hit, the Pirates defeated the Rockies 6-3.
