Kentucky Derby 2016 Post Positions Announced

Six of the last seven Kentucky Derby winners had either Raise a Native or Bold Ruler in their sire line, but Nyquist was sired by Uncle Mo, a descendant of Nasrullah.

O'Neill reached the Derby winner's circle in 2012 with I'll Have Another, who went on to win the Preakness Stakes. Nyquist, who has proven victorious at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and the Florida Derby, is still ahead of the Derby pack with Mohaymen (+800) and Exaggerator (+750) his longstanding threats. On Wednesday, Moyhamen was right behind Nyquist at +700 odds but he's down a notch to +800 due to his No. 14 post right beside the betting favorite.

Bob Baffert is pretty easy to read.

Horse racing got a lift from its first Triple Crown victor in 37 years last year. He won in 1997 and '98 with Silver Charm and Real Quiet. This year Mor Spirit flies under the radar. This means their jockeys can place them anywhere in the race and move to the lead whenever the pace dictates. Could pick up some pieces if the early pace is too hot. On paper he looks formidable with seven wins in seven starts.

But you can bet Nyquist, who has gotten a kick out of having such a prominent a horse named after him, will be following the Derby from Russian Federation. Nobody can fly a horse around that much.

Majesto has improved steadily and looks like the added eighth of a mile won't be an issue. He hasn't done anything wrong thus far on his career.

Regarding the Kentucky Derby, also called the fastest two minutes in sports, there are also great traditions, such as the boutique hats, mint juleps, and many crying eyes as the horses are entering the track to the sounds of Steven Foster's "My Old Kentucky Home". But his task won't be as tough as Danzing Candy's.

"The post draw didn't matter to us a ton, but we're happy being more toward the outside for sure", Nyquist trainer Doug O'Neill told reporters after the draw.

Pletcher, who has run as many as five in one Derby, tries again with a pair of 15-1 shots: Outwork and Destin, who won the Tampa Bay Derby in Oldsmar on March 12. It's like two different races.

When: Saturday, Churchill Downs, Louisville, Ky. After a slow break in his debut, he crushed a field sprinting at Churchill last fall.

"It would be bold to say they were going to win, but I think both are coming up to it well enough to run their best race".

Baffert is trying to make some new Derby memories, but can't escape the talk of American Pharoah and for now he's just fine with that chatter. Moyhamen would have to win and any of the other four horses would have to come in second or third to win the bet.

The big race is held at the same time every year.

Keith Desormeaux said he remains confident in part because Nyquist's best speed figures - statistics used to rate a horse's performance relative to field speed and track conditions - aren't as good as Exaggerator's best.

He is eager to put the past at rest when asked about his rough ride four years ago, saying, "I'm not going to go there". Whitmore (20-1) will break from post position 10.

A reminder, this weekend also kicks off summer harness racing action at Hawthorne.

Nyquist is the 3-1 favorite on the morning line set by Mike Battaglia of Churchill Downs, and he's the 7-2 favorite on the line set by Mike Watchmaker, Daily Racing Form's national handicapper.
