Matt Forte, Chicago Bears Part Ways After 8 Seasons

With Arian Foster's future with the team up in the air, it's possible they will be looking to find a running back in the NFL Draft, or through free agency.

Chicago Tribune Bears running back Matt Forte celebrates after scoring a touchdown in the fourth quarter against the Lions on January 3, 2016. On the last day of the 2015 season, he was still one of the best in the game. "We thank him for his professionalism and wish him the very best as he continues his career". So the Giants would be better off signing free agents to fill their holes at tackle and guard and then seeing what their four running backs can do. The score was the first touchdown scored in the stadium that went on to host Super Bowl XLVI. He’s remained remarkably durable in his career and played in all 16 games in five seasons.

The Bears will have Ka'Deem Carey in the backfield along with Langford.

From a business standpoint, Forte could still earn $4-5 million per year on the open market and Pace seems intent on spending money wisely, signing older veterans on cheap one-year deals while saving the big contracts for players he believes are still ascending.

The Seahawks would be an interesting fit, especially if Forte is willing to take a "Super Bowl contender discount" and play a mentor role for emerging young star Thomas Rawls. The most likely candidates would be teams that are searching for a versatile three-down running back like the Dallas CowboysNew England Patriots, or Seattle Seahawks.

In 2015, Forte rushed 218 times for 898 yards and four touchdowns, his lowest totals since the 2011 season. A team-captain in 2015, Forte is a two-time recipient of the team's Brian Piccolo Award (2008 and 2014), the team's 2015 Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee, and was one of eight National Football League finalists for the 2015 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award. The Patriots also have special-teams ace Brandon Bolden, reserve sub back James White, fullback Joey Iosefa and Tyler Gaffney, who has spent his first two seasons on injured reserve, on their roster. The Bears left town with Jamaal Charles, one of the best in the game, done for the season and the Chiefs at 1-5. LeGarrette Blount missed the end of the season due to a hip injury and will be a free agent in March.

In Forte's eight year career with the Bears, he averaged 1,075 rushing yards per season and 4.2 yards per carry.
